Theory Tuesdays

Theory Tuesdays is a nonacademic platform for theoretical discussion founded, organized and coordinated by artist Philip Matesic since 2009 in Zürich, Switzerland. Participants read beforehand then discuss contemporary art, design, literary, cultural and critical theory on a weekly basis, with texts selected and introduced each week by a different person.

Session 95: “Ecstatic Alphabets / Heaps of Language”

“Ecstatic Alphabets / Heaps of Language” is a group show at MoMa NY that ran until August 27, 2012. That we will be discussing it on August 28 in Zürich is not as far-fetched as it seems: One of the works featured in the exhibition is an edition of Bulletins of the Serving Library by Dexter Sinister – i.e. a work that can be seen not only in New York, and not only for the duration of the exhibition.

The publication contains texts dealing with the materiality of language and its letters – as do the installations, sculptures, prints in the show. Reading two texts from the exhibition catalog, we will be learning how rebellious the letter L is; how many novels with one-letter titles there are (almost 26); and why Mitt Romney doesn’t like Sesame Street.
