Theory Tuesdays

Theory Tuesdays is a nonacademic platform for theoretical discussion founded, organized and coordinated by artist Philip Matesic since 2009 in Zürich, Switzerland. Participants read beforehand then discuss contemporary art, design, literary, cultural and critical theory on a weekly basis, with texts selected and introduced each week by a different person.

Session 117: “Style Writing” by Scum, Cheech H and Techno 169

During this Theory Tuesdays session, Rémi Jaccard presented (with visuals) the essay “Style Writing” by Scum, Cheech H and Techno 169.

“Style Writing” is a thorough analysis of the alphabet and it’s use by graffiti writers. Characterizing every letter as well as different forms of putting them together, from tag to wildstyle, this text gives a very structured overview of American graffiti.

The authors – all writers themselves – try to explain the esthetics of style and their approach to it. In a culture usually distrusting theoretical debates, this 1996 essay is a rare exception.
