Theory Tuesdays

Theory Tuesdays is a nonacademic platform for theoretical discussion founded, organized and coordinated by artist Philip Matesic since 2009. Participants read beforehand then discuss contemporary art, design, literary, cultural and critical theory on a weekly basis, with the texts selected and introduced each week by a different person.

Session 73: “Aesthetic Sovereignty” by Christoph Menke

During this Theory Tuesdays session, Mark Baskett selected the chapter “Aesthetic Sovereignty” from the book The Sovereignty of Art: Aesthetic Negativity in Adorno and Derrida by Christoph Menke (MIT Press, 1998). The discussion outlined core elements of Menke´s argument in relation to aesthetic sovereignty, Adorno, and Derrida. We also “wrestled-out” the possible implications of these ideas with regards to both producing and viewing visual art today.
