Theory Tuesdays is a nonacademic platform for theoretical discussion founded, organized and coordinated by artist Philip Matesic since 2009 in Zürich, Switzerland. Participants read beforehand then discuss contemporary art, design, literary, cultural and critical theory on a weekly basis, with texts selected and introduced each week by a different person.

Session 69: What Does Public Mean? Art as a participant in the Public Arena

What Does Public Mean? Art as a participant in the Public Arena (Torpedo Press, 2006) is an anthology edited by Tone Hansen, an artist and research fellow at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. The book focuses on art projects that take place outside of established art institutions in Oslo, Hamburg and San Sebastian.

The three essays that were be discussed during this session included an “Introduction” by Tone Hansen, “A Frame Around Reality” by Marianne Heier, an Oslo-based artist and “Publicness: The Site-Specificity of a Concept” by Stian Grøgaard, Professor in the department of Fine Art at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts.
